Songwriting Workshop & Masterclass

Songwriting Workshop & Masterclass

Join us for a 3-hour, weekly songwriting workshop that combines writing exercises with lively technique discussions in a masterclass format – where we take a close look at songs written by workshop participants. Bring one of your completed songs and play it live, or via recording. If you can’t play it yourself, please bring someone who can. Song links and lyrics can be emailed ahead of time. A guitar (and maybe piano) will be available. All levels welcome. We will probably have time for 1-3 participants’ songs. If you don’t have a song to bring, just listen and participate in other aspects of the experience. Participating as an observer can be as beneficial as bringing your own song.

Loose Workshop Outline

  • 15 minutes: Warmup group writing exercise
  • 45-1 hour: Technique topic (something like metaphor, imagery in lyrics, productive repetition, song form, the chorus, song titles, etc.)
  • 2 hours: listen to 1-3 participants’ songs and discuss relevant techniques / issues

Price: sliding scale (100-200 Kr)

If you can’t afford to make a financial contribution at this time, please consider making another type of contribution and come anyway, as class size permits.

Testimonials

“Jonelle’s songwriting workshops gave us an exclusive tour behind the craft of lyric writing. She invited us to observe some of the structure behind a song, and how to keep the listener’s attention from beginning to end. After every session, we walked away with at least one clear tool to work with … If Jonelle’s ship happens to pass your shores … try to get on board!” B. Heens – songwriter, producer, designer, teacher & participant in “Exploring Lyrics” (a 3 part, 9-hour workshop)

“Thanks for the invigorating workshop. I really enjoyed it. It was nice to feel there was space to delve into any aspect of the topic that interested us, and to then get knowledgable answers to all those questions. Nice group of people, too. :-)” G. Arnold – screenwriter & participant in “Productive Repetition”

“Very good workshop! It has provided new ways to think about and write lyrics.” – T. Edholm – songwriter & professional musician (participant in “Exploring Lyrics” – a 3-part, 9-hour workshop)

“Great meetup, we got a lot of tips on how to improve our songwriting skills!” – A.K. Berkvist – songwriter & lyricist (hobbyist)
